How’s your week going?

Have you been active?

Has your eating been on point?

There’s only ONE more week of January – how scary is that?!

Whether your flying with your goals, chipping away or feel stuck in a rut, here’s a few tips that I hope you find helpful.

Today, it’s all about cravings…

There’s some more obvious ways to curb cravings like eating more protein which helps us feel fuller for longer or removing yourself from the situation (sweetie shop!).

But here’s 6 simple ways you may not have thought of to put in your ‘tool box’ next time the urge to raid the bakery strikes!

Believe it or not, brushing your teeth actually kills cravings.

I don’t know a scientific reason for this, but from experience, after scrubbing my chops, I lose the desire to eat and rather enjoy the fresh taste in my mouth.

Food also tastes strange right after brushing (ever tried an orange/apple? – urrrgh) so I tend to lose my appetite.

Brush your tongue and use a healthy amount of toothpaste/mouthwash for an even stronger effect.

Many people have false food cravings that are really THIRST cravings.

Your brain detects that you’re low on water and sends out a craving signal for you to drink more water but this signal gets misinterpreted as hunger.

Even if you’re not thirsty, keep sipping.

It helps to fight cravings in a big way.

Studies have shown that when research subjects sniffed nut butter or peppermint extract their cravings dramatically reduced.

The reason is that these smells may cause the brain to release certain neurotransmitters responsible for controlling hunger.

Sniff and get slim….hmm weird – imagine if you sniffed it and ATE it?!

I feel an almond butter oatcake washed down with a peppermint tea coming on!

Exhaustion can be just as bad as being a couch potato.

There’s countless stories of men and women who were experiencing great fat loss results until they ran themselves into the ground, got overly hungry and woke up 10 pounds heavier with a load of empty pizza boxes surrounding them.

Recovery is just as important as exercise so make sleep a priority.

Around 7/8 hours of sleep a night is good to aim for.

Not sure exactly why this works but popping some sugarless chewing gum when a craving strikes, almost instantly calms it.

When I’m craving something sweet for dessert or trying to overcome temptation (I’m human too), I sometimes just throw a piece of chewing gum in my cheeks and BOOOOM…magic.

There’s some questionable ingredients in some chewing gum but if it stops you having a blow out at the bakery, it’s worth it

  • Barley has 12 grams per 1/2 cup.
  • Beans like black beans, refried and lima beans all have 6 or more grams per 1/2 cup.
  • Peas have more than 9 grams per 1/2 cup.
  • Strawberries have 4 grams per cup, raspberries more than 5 and blackberries more than 7 grams.
  • Broccoli has 7 grams per 3/4 cooked cup.
  • Oatmeal has 7 grams per 3/4 cup.
  • Apples have 4 grams of fibre in the form of pectin.

Add a few of these tricks to your day to crush your cravings and let me know it goes.

What works for you?

What doesn’t?

And hey,

I posted a pretty scary video the other day which may change the way you look at food FOREVER! (hopefully)
